When I moved to Alaska in 1984, I was shocked by the high prices and low quality of produce at the grocery store. Determined to grow my own food, despite never having gardened before, I raised a few seedlings, planted them, and watered diligently. 💦

They died. 😔

I turned to books at the library and kept encountering the term "compost." Curious, I contacted the Cooperative Extension Service for advice, but they said it would take five years to make compost. I needed results much sooner.

Then, I discovered a little-known composting method from over a century ago. I thought, "What have I got to lose?"

A few days later, during a snowstorm❄️, I grabbed a pitchfork and turned my compost pile. To my amazement, it was hot and steaming—it worked! By June, I harvested a bounty of lettuce, broccoli, and other vegetables.

Turning my first compost pile was a turning point in my life.
